How to Hike to The Pool Rocky Mountain National Park

Located in the heart of the Park, the hike to the Pool Rocky Mountain National Park is a family friendly walk along a stream and through some interesting rocks to the final pool at the end. This is a moderate hike with very little elevation gain. While this is a nice wander through the woods, we found the pool at the end of this hike slightly underwelming.

Details of Hiking to the Pool Rocky Mountain National Park

We did this hike during the spring months when there was snow on the ground, but this makes a good year round trail. There are limited views as most of the trail is in the woods. Starting from the Fern Lake Trailhead in the Moraine Park area, the trail initially winds through lush meadows and aspen groves, providing views of the surrounding mountains. As you progress, the trail follows the Big Thompson River.

The path is well-maintained and features a mix of gradual inclines and level stretches, making it great for slower hikers or families with young kids. You’ll pass several scenic spots, including Arch Rocks and the cascading water of Fern Falls which was the most interest part of the hike.

After about 1.7 miles, you’ll arrive at The Pool, a tranquil spot where the river widens and creates a natural pool surrounded by rock formations. This is a great place to rest, enjoy a picnic, or simply take in the serene environment. As mentioned, we enjoyed this hike, but it doesn’t make the list of some of our other favorites in the park.
