British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a true Caribbean gem, blending unspoiled beaches, a laid-back island vibe, and warm, turquoise waters. With friendly locals, a rich sailing culture, and stunning natural scenery, the BVI is a top choice for travelers looking for both serenity and adventure.
After working in the BVI in college and my early 20’s it was incredible to visit the islands again with my family for a week long sailing trip. Below you can see a guide to the British Virgin Islands to help you plan your next visit.
BVI at a Glance
Weather
The BVI enjoys warm, tropical weather year-round with average temperatures around 27°C (81°F). Steady trade winds help keep the islands breezy and pleasant. While the region is within the hurricane belt, storms are most likely from June to November.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit the BVI is from December to April, when the weather is sunny, dry, and perfect for sailing and beach days. This is also the peak travel season, so expect more visitors and higher prices. For fewer crowds and better deals, consider visiting in the shoulder months of May and early June.
Currency and Tipping
The official currency in the BVI is the U.S. dollar (USD). Tipping is appreciated—around 10–15% at restaurants and for tour guides or exceptional service.
Must Eat
Sample Caribbean favorites like fresh grilled fish, conch fritters, roti, and lobster from Anegada. Wash it all down with a Painkiller cocktail, the BVI’s signature drink, originally created at the Soggy Dollar Bar.
Power Up
The BVI uses plug types A and B with a voltage of 110 V—same as in the United States.
Language
English is the official language of the BVI and is widely spoken throughout the islands.
Popular Activities
Sail between the islands, lounge on the powdery beaches of Jost Van Dyke, explore The Baths on Virgin Gorda, snorkel coral reefs teeming with marine life, or hike through the tropical trails of Sage Mountain National Park on Tortola.
