How to Plan Your National Parks Trip
Visiting a national park is one of the most rewarding adventures you can have and luckily there are currently 63 National Parks in the United States: but a little planning goes a long way. From avoiding the crowds to knowing what to pack, hereโs everything you need to make your trip smooth, fun, and unforgettable.
Quick Planning Tips
- Best Time to Visit: Spring and fall are usually the sweet spots: fewer crowds, milder weather, and epic scenery. Summer is beautiful but busy, so if you go then, plan extra time for parking and popular hikes and be aware of hot weather conditions.
- America the Beautiful Pass: If youโre hitting more than a few parks in a year, this $80 annual pass is a no-brainer. It covers entrance fees for you and everyone in your car. Keep it in your glove box or wallet so youโre ready at the gate. There are also special passes for 4th graders and seniors. Save time getting into the park by purchasing your pass online.
- Timed Entries & Reservations: Some parks (like Zion, Yosemite, and Acadia) require timed entry or shuttle reservations. Check the park website before you go: itโs a little planning upfront that saves a ton of stress. This is also true of campsites in the parks – plan early!
- Packing & Safety Basics: Layers are your friend! Even summer days can get chilly in the mornings or at higher elevations. Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, and sturdy shoes. Donโt forget a small first aid kit and a map or GPS device: cell service can be spotty.
A little prep goes a long way toward a smooth, enjoyable adventure. These tips will help you focus on what really matters: exploring, taking in the views, and making memories you wonโt forget.
