MONTENEGRO

Montenegro is a gorgeous and small country with a stunning Adriatic coastline and mountainour National Parks. For a long time, it was one of Europe’s hidden gems, but it’s quickly gaining recognition as a must-visit destination. Travelers are drawn to its rugged mountains, pristine beaches, and charming old towns, especially during the summer.

We finally visited Montenegro this past summer after having it on our travel list for years. We spent a full week on a road trip around the country and could easily have spent another week with the amount of things to see!

Montenegro at a Glance

Weather: Montenegro has a varied climate depending on the region. The coastal areas enjoy a Mediterranean climate with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. Inland areas, especially in the mountainous regions, have a continental climate with colder winters and warmer summers. Average temperatures range from 5°C (41°F) in winter to 30°C (86°F) in summer, similar to its Adriatic neighbors.

Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Montenegro is between April and June or September to October. During these months, the weather is comfortable, and you’ll avoid the peak tourist crowds. July and August are the busiest months, particularly in hotspots like Kotor and Budva.

Currency and Tipping: Montenegro also uses the Euro (EUR) as its official currency. Tipping around 5-10% for good service is appreciated, though not obligatory.

Must Eat: Try Montenegrin specialties such as Njeguški pršut (dry-cured ham), kačamak (a dish made from potatoes and cheese), and fresh seafood from the Adriatic coast. Don’t miss out on local wines and the strong Montenegrin coffee.

Power Up: Plug types C and F, 230 V.

Language: Montenegrin is the official language, but English is widely understood, especially in tourist areas.

Popular Activities: Explore the UNESCO-listed Bay of Kotor and its picturesque old towns, hike in Durmitor National Park, visit the iconic Ostrog Monastery, and relax along the pristine beaches of the Adriatic coast.
