Another great option is to do a short walk and have a picnic (or a cup of coffee). The field area at the base of the Flatirons is a wonderful place to spend time whether you are walking or just taking it all in!

Where to park to hike the Boulder Flatirons?

The most convenient place to park is at Boulder’s Chautauqua Park trailhead. This lot fills up early, so you can also park on Baseline Rd. If you are visiting during the summer on a weekend, you can also consider the free shuttle. You can find information on the Park-to-Park hiker shuttle online, which operates from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Is there a fee to park or hike at the Boulder Flatirons?

During the summer there is a fee to park in the lot or on the street. You can pay at the kiosk at the lot or more recently you will need to download an app.

When is the best time to try the Boulder Flatiron Hiking Trails?

You can hike at the Boulder Flatirons all year long, although the best hiking is April-November. In the winter, you should plan to wear microspikes if it is icy or snowy. Summers in Boulder can be hot, so you are best off hiking early in the morning if possible.

What to pack to hike the Flatirons?

As mentioned already, there are many ways to hike around the Boulder Flatirons. Trails are easy to challenging, and most of the lower trails are wide and flat. As you get further up in elevation, the trails become steeper and rockier. You can simply hike at the base of the Flatirons, or head right up in between several of the Flatirons for a more exciting walk. Below are some suggestions for different hiking routes at the Boulder Flatirons, or simply park and explore for yourself.

First and Second Flatiron Hike

This is a 2.4 mile out and back hike that takes you up between the 1st and 2nd Flatirons. It is a challenging route that gains about 1500 feet of elevation. This route is shown on the map above. This is a popular hike with great views, but is steep, especially towards the end.

Bluebell, Royal Arch, Bluebell-Baird and Meadow Loop Trail

This is a lovely walking trail that is about 2.4 miles long with 700 feet of elevation gain. Overall it is a moderate trail, but since there are many trail options, you can pick and choose what works for you. The trail mostly explores the meadow area below the Flatirons and walks along the base where the rocks begin to soar upwards.

Royal Arch Via Sentinel Pass

This 3.1 mile trail gains 1,400 feet of elevation. The first part of the hike traverses the meadow and you can choose from several trails. You will get to a pine forest and start to gain elevation including staircases. From here you climb to Sentinel Pass and it is 0.5 miles to Royal Arch. This cool arch is a great destination with views out across Boulder.

Climbing the Boulder Flatirons

Another popular activity when you’re visiting the Flatirons is rock climbing. If you are hiking, keep your eyes out for climbers heading up the rock faces. This is a rock climbing destination and there are many routes throughout the area. Note that there are occasional closures due to raptors’ nesting.
