What you Need to Know: Hamburger Rock Campground

Hamburger Rock campground, just outside the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park is a perfect place to camp for a few night while you enjoy this more remote section of Canyonlands. Located just a short distance outside of the park entrance, Hamburger Rock is a beautiful and convenient place to stay if you aren’t able to camp right in the park itself.

We spent 3 night at Hamburger Rock and you can find all the details you need to know to plan your visit below. You can see more about visiting Canyonlands in our Complete Guide.

What to Expect at Hamburger Rock

Hamburger Rock is a rustic campground setup for a picturesque experience. The campground offers stunning views of the surrounding desert landscape and unique rock formations, including the namesake Hamburger Rock. Many of the campsite are looped right around the rock making it relatively private. There are basic amenities such as restrooms but no running water. Campsites are first-come, first-served and typically fill up quickly, especially during peak season, so arriving early is advisable.

The area is ideal for stargazing due to minimal light pollution, and it’s a great base for exploring nearby trails and viewpoints within Canyonlands National Park. We used this as a base for several hikes and loved watching the sunset. Additionally, be mindful of the weather, as conditions can change rapidly, and be prepared for both hot days and chilly nights.

How to Get to Hamburger Rock

To reach the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, start by driving to Moab, Utah. From Moab, take U.S. Highway 191 south for about 40 miles, then turn onto Utah Highway 211. Follow this highway for approximately 30 miles, which will lead you directly to the Needles entrance. The road to the Needles is well-marked, but be prepared for a scenic drive through varied terrain. The road to Hamburger rock is before the entrance by about 3 miles on the right. Cell service is limited in the area, so it’s best to download your maps so you can use them offline.

Amenities at Hamburger Rock

The sites are first come at Hamburger Rock and it is best to arrive early to get a spot. There are specific campsites at Hamburger Rock but you can find many other sites along the road just past the official campsite. The only amenity at the site is a bathroom, so make sure you have enough water (you can fill up bottles at the Visitor Center). Campsites have a fire pit and table.

There is NO FOOD at the park or campsite. The best place to get a few supplies is at the next private campground down the road, but you should try to arrive with everything you will need as this part of the park is very remote.
