This fun little hike in NH is worth the effort for some nice views. Located in Winslow State Park and Rollins State Park, this hike is dog and kid-friendly. There are several ways to hike Mount Kearsarge but our favorite route is to leave from Winslower State Park and go up the Winslow Trail and down the Barlow Trails.
I’ve done this hike most recently in the summer of 2025.

Quick look at the Hike Mount Kearsarge NH
Distance: 2.8 miles
Elevation: 1,100 feet
Difficult: moderate (steep)
This hike ascends steeply up the Winslow trail before reaching the rocky summit with 360 degree views. The trail down on the Barlow Trail is more gradual with several interesting view points. It took us about 90 minutes to do this hike with Dave, myself and Calypso.
Recommended Route: Winslow + Barlow Loop
Ascent via Winslow Trail
- Distance: ~1.1 miles
- Elevation gain: ~1,100โฏft
- Terrain: Steep and rocky, with tree roots and slabs. Expect a tough but short climb with great views near the summit
Summit
At the summit, hikers find a rocky open area and an old fire tower with 360ยฐ views. On clear days, you can see the White Mountains, Lake Sunapee, Mount Monadnock, Vermontโs Green Mountains: and even the Boston skyline far to the southeast
Descent via Barlow Trail
- Distance: ~1.7 miles to return
- Trail profile: More gradual and less technical than the Winslow Trail, passing through forest with short scenic outlooks. Ideal for descending to protect knees and avoid slippery sections

Seasonal Notes
This hike is a great one to do year round. If you are here in the winter, make sure you have microspikes or snowshoes. Note that the road to the trailhead might be closed adding some distance to the hike. The only time I would avoid this trail is early spring (April-May) when the trail is muddy and the blackflies are unpleasant.
What to Pack
While it’s short hike but it’s important to bring a few things.
- Sturdy hiking shoes with traction
- Water and snacks
- Layered clothing & windbreaker (summit is exposed)
- Rain gear depending on weather
- Sunscreen and leashed dog (if hiking with pets)
- Exact change for park fee (~$4/adult; free for kids โค5 or NH seniors 65+)
