I recently updated my list of my favorite essential travel items, and it had me thinking – what is really essential. If I could only commit to 5 things to take on my next trip (or every trip) what would I suggest? I put this list together of 5 things I never travel without.
In many ways everything on this list is obvious, but there is a value in deciding what is essential and making sure that you prioritize these items.

Sling Bag
A few years ago I was searching for a small bag that I could travel with to hold my phone, money and a few essentials. The goal was a safe bag, something not totally ugly, something small, and easy to access. After trying so mayn different options, I finally got a simple sling bag that I purchased online.
This sling bag became part of my Identity over the next few years. I’m now on my second sling bag and I use it everywhere – hiking, planes, travel, etc. There are many similar bags (usually sold as fanny packs) but I prefer the smaller bags that can be slung across my chest. This keeps the bag safe and also let’s me access my phone quickly and easily for photos.
The current bag I use is no longer available, but this bag is almost the same or you can check out this bag from REI.

Phone (and the correct charging devices)
This might seem like a no-brainer, but there are several additional things to remember when you are choosing to bring your phone. If you will be traveling in another country, it’s important to make sure you will have service and that you have the right chargers to plug into the outlets.
Another consideration is whether there even is cell service. Before we leave on any trip, we always download google maps and other hiking maps so we can access directions from our phones without being online.
I love to take travel photos with my phone so making sure I have enough storage and back up for me photos before I leave is always at the top of my list.

Travel Insurance
This is not an item exactly, but I never travel without travel insurance, specifically when I’m traveling outside the country. There are 3 main reasons to get travel insurance and we used insurance several times when we’ve been traveling.
Emergency Medical Coverage: Travel insurance can cover unexpected medical expenses, including accidents or illnesses, which might not be covered by your regular health insurance when traveling internationally.
Trip Cancellation and Interruption Protection: If your trip is canceled or interrupted due to unforeseen events (e.g., illness, natural disasters, or emergencies), travel insurance can reimburse you for non-refundable costs like flights and accommodations.
Lost, Stolen, or Delayed Baggage: Travel insurance can provide compensation and support if your luggage is lost, stolen, or delayed, helping you replace essential items during your trip.
We’ve used many insurance companies over the years, and you can search for different coverages through Visitors Coverage among others.
Basic First Aid Supplies
Whether you are going to a day hike or planning a road trip around a foreign country, it’s important to have your own basic first aid supplies. I usually put together my own first aid supplies but you can also buy a simple first aid kit for travel that includes the basics. Exactly what you put in your first aid kit depends on what you are doing on your trip – will you be hiking, it this mostly a city vacation where you can easily get first aid supplies.
Here is a list of some of the things you should include in your first aid supplies.
- Adhesive Bandages (Assorted Sizes): For covering minor cuts, blisters, or scrapes.
- Antiseptic Wipes or Solution: To clean wounds and prevent infection.
- Pain Relievers: Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen for headaches, muscle pain, or fever.
- Gauze Pads and Medical Tape: To cover larger wounds or stop bleeding.
- Antihistamines: For allergies, insect bites, or mild allergic reactions.
- Hydrocortisone Cream: To relieve itching and irritation from rashes, bug bites, or mild skin conditions.
- Thermometer: A compact digital thermometer to monitor fever or illness.
- Disposable Gloves: To protect yourself and others while treating wounds.

Comfortable Shoes
No matter where you are going – pack comfortable shoes! This is a no brainer but becomes one of the most important thing to have on any trip. Never pack brand new unworn shoes – make sure to break them in before your trip. The perfect travel shoe depends on the time of year, the activities you will be doing and your own preference.
I almost always pack a pair of sneaker/hiking boots and a pair of chocos. These two pairs of shoes cover most situations. If you will travel and eating out you may also want a casual pair of packable shoes.
Of course there are other items like passports and travel documents, credit and debit cards, and basic clothes!
