Growing up in Southern Maine and living in New Hampshire, I had heard so many amazing things about Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Fast forward to today and this area has become one of my favorite places in New England. We love it so much that a few year’s ago we purchased a rental property in the area and have enjoyed exploring the region, specifically East Burke. In this guide of the best things to do in Burke, I’m sharing my favorite places to visit and explore from skiing, mountain biking and hiking to cute coffee shops and tikki bars.

Where is East Burke
East Burke is located in the Northeast part of Vermont north of St. Johnsbury. The easiest way to get around this area is by car (or bike!). The region is very rural with many dir roads.

10 Best Things to do in East Burke (and the area around Burke)
East Burke, Vermont, may be a small town, but it’s packed with charm, outdoor adventure, and local culture. It’s a great place to visit at almost any time of the year as there is always something to do! Here are some of my favorite things to do in Burke, Vermont.
Burke Mountain Resort
A must-visit for skiing and snowboarding in the winter, and hiking, mountain biking, or scenic chairlift rides in the summer and fall. The views from the top are unforgettable. This mountain has a small mountain charm but great skiing.

Kingdom Trails
World-renowned for mountain biking, these trails also offer hiking in the warmer months. Riders of all skill levels can enjoy miles of scenic trails through forests and along rivers. This is one of the biggest draws to the area. If you don’t want the trail rides, there are so many amazing roads to bike in the area.
You will need to get a trail pass to bike the Kingdom Trails.

Cross Country Skiing
In the winter there are many cross country skiing opportunities. There is skiing at the mountain, up on Darling Hill or drive over to Craftbury Commons.

Burke Farmers Market
Open seasonally, this market features fresh local produce, baked goods, crafts, and friendly faces — a great way to connect with the community and take home a taste of Vermont. You can also ski over neaer Lake WIlloughby and some of these trails are groomed.
Hiking in the Area
There are several excellent hiking trails in East Burke. Some of the most popular include.
Burke Mountain Trail (via Red & Blue / Red & Profile Trails)
- Length: ~5.6 miles round trip
- Elevation Gain: ~2,100 feet
- Description: A challenging but rewarding climb to the fire tower with panoramic views of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.
West Pointe Trail
- Length: ~3.3 miles out and back
- Elevation Gain: ~1,180 feet
- Description: A peaceful forest hike with steady elevation gain and scenic overlooks — great for a moderate afternoon trek.
Bald Mountain (Westmore)
- Length: 2–3 miles depending on route
- Elevation Gain: ~1,300 feet
- Description: A local favorite featuring a fire tower at the summit with stunning views of Lake Willoughby and the surrounding mountains.
Haystack Mountain (Westmore)
- Length: 0.9–1.1 miles
- Elevation Gain: 500–850 feet
- Description: Short and steep with a rocky summit and some of the best views of Lake Willoughby below.
Mount Pisgah (Lake Willoughby)
- Length: ~4.1 miles round trip
- Elevation Gain: ~1,500 feet
- Description: One of the most iconic hikes in Vermont — follow wooded trails to dramatic cliff overlooks high above Lake Willoughby.

Mount Hor (Lake Willoughby)
- Length: ~3.5 miles round trip
- Elevation Gain: ~1,200 feet
- Description: Offers the opposite perspective from Mount Pisgah, with incredible views across the lake and fewer crowds.
7. Darling Hill Loop (Kingdom Trails)
- Length: Varies, 3–6 miles possible
- Elevation Gain: Moderate
- Description: A scenic mix of open fields, forests, and rolling terrain — ideal for hiking, biking, or snowshoeing.
Lake Willoughby (boating and beaches)
Lake Willoughby has a lot to offer from hiking trails (listed above) to the beach and swimming holes. Note that the main part to visit is the southern point. You will find two beaches (one of which is a nude beach). You can swim here in the summer. Driving along the shore is so pretty and you can find a few waterfalls and swimming holes/rope swings in the area.


Kingdom Craft Brewery
Relax after a day of outdoor activities with a local craft beer. This brewery offers a cozy tasting room and seasonal brews inspired by the region.
Waterfalls and Scenic Drives
The area around Burke is dotted with charming waterfalls and scenic backroads. Take a drive through the fall foliage or stop for a short hike to find hidden gems. Make sure to drive over Darling Hill and Lake Willoughby but really you can’t go wrong!

From hearty Vermont breakfasts to farm-to-table dinners, East Burke and nearby towns offer cozy spots to refuel. Don’t miss trying local specialties like maple syrup treats or fresh cheese. Here are some of our favorites.
