Konorchek Canyons, Kyrgyzstan: Where to Stop Between Bishkek and the Lakes

Last month when we flew into Bishkek and wanted to find an interesting stop between there and Song Kul Lake. We had the whole day to drive but wanted somewhere along the way to stretch our legs. Konorchek Canyon is a lovely and easy little stop directly on the way to road between these two destinations.

If you are looking for a picnic spot or a short hike, this is a great option. Below I’m sharing exactly how to visit Konorchek Canyon- see all of our guides to Kyrgystan.

We’ve also seen this referred to as Kochkor Canyon.

I’ve spent decades exploring family adventures, epic hikes, and National Parks across the world. For more inspiration, check out my National Parks Page or see some of my favorite destinations to plan your next adventure and make sure to join my weekly newsletter.

Where Is Konorchek Canyon?

Konorchek Canyon is located in Kyrgyzstan a few hours and can be visited as part of a road trip between Bishkek and the country’s mountain and lake regions. It is directly off A365 on a short dirt road about 1.5 hours from Bishkek. You can park near the entrance to the dirt road and walk or drive as far up as you can in your car. The stopped pretty quickly and walked up into the canyon, but a few vans were camping here.

One of the reasons we recommend stopping here is that it doesn’t require a major detour from a larger Kyrgyzstan road trip. Instead of simply driving through the mountains, you can build in a short stop to explore the landscape.

How to Get to Konorchek Canyon

The easiest way to reach the canyon is in your own car or with a driver, although you can also visit by taking a Marshrutka.

By Car or Private Driver

From Bishkek, follow the A365 toward Balykchy/Cholpon-Ata. Continue past Kemin and watch for Kafe Boz Salkyn on the right. Just after the cafe, look for the turn near the Krasnyy Most (Krasnaya Rechka) Bridge and the brown Konorchek Canyon sign. We missed this turn the first time and had to turn around.

Turn right onto the rough, unpaved road near the bridge and immediately cross a train track and continue as far as you can before parking.

By Marshrutka

From the Bishkek Bus Station, take a marshrutka heading toward Balykchy, Cholpon-Ata, or Karakol (Балыкчы / Чолпон-Ата / Каракол). Ask the driver to drop you near Krasnaya Rechka Bridge or Kafe Boz Salkyn. It helps to have the location saved on your phone so you can show the driver exactly where you want to get off.

If you take a marshrutka to the canyon, plan ahead for your return. Walk back to the same roadside area where you were dropped off and flag down a marshrutka traveling toward Bishkek. They pass regularly, although you may need to wait for one with space. Hitchhiking is another option, but agree on a price before getting in.

Hiking at Konorchek Canyon

Once you park – you can simply start hiking. We started by following the road and continuing to the left when we had the choice. There is a small stream/wash you can follow and several extra trails that go up into the canyons.

The walk to the main canyon takes about 45 minutes, with a few easy rock scrambles along the way. If you find yourself needing to do significant climbing, you’ve probably taken the wrong path.

What Makes Konorchek Canyon Worth Visiting?

The Landscape

The biggest reason to stop is the scenery.

The canyon is surrounded by rugged mountains and broad valleys, with a landscape that can look dramatically different depending on the season. It is much different than the view you get along the main road. In spring and early summer, the valley can be greener, while later in the summer the surrounding mountains and dry grasslands take on the golden and brown tones that are characteristic of much of Kyrgyzstan.

Fewer Crowds

Compared with some of Kyrgyzstan’s better-known destinations, you may find the area around Konorchek Canyon considerably quieter. The views here are not as dramtic as Fairytale Canyon but the trade off is far fewer people.

That makes it a particularly nice stop if you’re looking for somewhere to stretch your legs without turning your itinerary into another major tourist attraction.

Where to Stop After Konorchek Canyon

One of the best things about Konorchek Canyon is that it works naturally as part of a larger Kyrgyzstan itinerary.

Depending on your route, you can continue toward Issyk-Kul, Song-Kul, or other mountain destinations.

If you’re building a northern Kyrgyzstan road trip, I’d recommend thinking of Konorchek Canyon as one scenic stop among several rather than a destination that needs its own overnight stay.
