SLOVENIA
Slovenia is a small but incredibly beautiful country, known for its stunning landscapes, charming towns, and outdoor adventures. Nestled between the Alps and the Adriatic, Slovenia has long been one of Europe’s hidden gems, but it’s quickly becoming a must-visit destination for travelers. With its picturesque lakes, lush forests, and historic castles, Slovenia offers something for everyone.
We spent an amazing week exploring the country, and we could have easily spent more time discovering its natural beauty and vibrant culture!
Weather: Slovenia has a varied climate depending on the region. The coastal areas along the Adriatic enjoy a Mediterranean climate with mild, rainy winters and warm, dry summers. Inland, especially in the mountainous regions, the climate is more continental, with colder winters and warmer summers. Average temperatures range from 5°C (41°F) in winter to 25°C (77°F) in summer, with cooler temperatures in the Alps.
Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Slovenia is between May and June or September to October. During these months, the weather is pleasant, and you’ll avoid the peak summer crowds. July and August are the busiest months, particularly in popular destinations like Lake Bled and Ljubljana.
Currency and Tipping: Slovenia uses the Euro (EUR) as its official currency. Tipping around 5-10% for good service is appreciated but not required.
Must Eat: Sample Slovenian specialties like potica (a traditional nut roll), idrijski žlikrofi (dumplings filled with potato), and fresh seafood from the Adriatic coast. Don’t miss local wines, especially from the wine regions of Primorska, and a cup of strong Slovenian coffee.
Power Up: Plug types C and F, 230 V.
Language: Slovene is the official language, but English is widely understood, particularly in tourist areas.
Popular Activities: Explore the picturesque Lake Bled and its island church, hike in Triglav National Park, discover the charming capital city of Ljubljana, and visit the caves at Postojna and Škocjan. Enjoy the serene beauty of Slovenia’s vineyards and coastline as well.
