Rising dramatically above the forests of the southern White Mountains, Mount Chocorua is one of New Hampshireโs most recognizable peaks. You can see it from far away and it’s one of the first big mountains we get to when we drive from our home in the seacoast of NH.
With its rocky summit, sweeping 360-degree views, and a reputation as one of the most photographed mountains in New England, Chocorua is a hike that feels much bigger than its elevation suggests – and it earns it’s place as one of the best peaks on the 52 With A View list. Below you can see exactly how to Hike Mount Chocorua.
At 3,478 feet, Mount Chocorua is just short of the 4,000 foot status, but it delivers one of the most rewarding summit experiences in the state. There are several routes to the summit, but they all off ledges and uninterrupted views across the White Mountains, the Lakes Region, and the surrounding forests.
Iโve spent decades exploring family adventures, epic hikes, and National Parks across the world. For more inspiration, check out my National Parks Page or see some of my favorite destinations to plan your next adventure and make sure to join my weekly newsletter.

Mount Chocorua Hiking Overview
Trail Distance: 7.6โ8.5 miles round trip (depending on route) Elevation Gain: Approximately 2,500 feet Difficulty: Moderate to challenging Trail Type: Out-and-back or loop options Dog Friendly: Yes, but use caution near exposed ledges Best Time to Hike: Late spring through fall; winter requires additional experience and gear
I’ve hiked Chocorua many times. My favorite trail is probably the Piper Trail which is about 8.4 miles round trip with about 2,700 feet of elevation gain.
Another good option is the Champney Falls Trail (you also get the bonus of a waterfall). The trail is 7.6 miles round trip and about 2,200 feet of elevation.
There are lots of other trails up the mountain and I usually try to turn it into a loop – just be careful that the trail you take down ends where you actually parked your car, last summer Hadley did this hike and ended up in completely the wrong parking lot!
