I’ve seen stories and social media posts about taking advantage of an Azores Layover for a long time, but when I saw Azores Airlines pop up as an option for our flight home from Europe this summer, I jumped on the opportunity. In this article I’ll explore how to book an Azores layover and what to on to make the most of your time on the islands.
How to Schedule an Azore Layover
If you’re flying between Europe and North America, a layover in the Azores: especially on the lush and volcanic island of São Miguel, is one of the most magical detours you can take. Thanks to Azores Airlines (SATA), you can often add a stopover of up to 7 days at no extra cost. I planned a 3-day layover on my way home from Madeira, and it turned out to be one of the most breathtaking stops of the entire trip.
To book a layover in the Azores, start by searching for flights with Azores Airlines (also known as SATA Air Açores). When booking a transatlantic flight between North America (like Boston or New York) and Europe, choose the “Stopover Azores” option on their website. This allows you to add a stop in Ponta Delgada (PDL) on São Miguel Island for up to 7 days at no extra airfare cost.
During the booking process, you’ll select your departure and destination cities as usual, then choose how many days you’d like to spend in the Azores as a stopover. The system will automatically adjust the itinerary and connect your flights accordingly. It’s a simple and affordable way to turn your travel into a mini-vacation in one of the most beautiful island destinations in the Atlantic.
Why Plan a Layover in the Azores?
São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores, offers a perfect mix of adventure, natural beauty, and relaxation, but since it’s out in the middle of the Atlantic it’s sometime overlooked. Booking a visit with a layover is the perfect way to explore this island.
How Long do you Need on your Layover?
We spent 3 days in the Azores on our layover and it honestly wasn’t enough time. I would recommend 3 days as a minimum. Ideally you should spend 4-5 days in the Azores to see just Sao Miquel and more time if you plan to island hop. This assumes that you will be hiking and driving around the island.
Where to Stay on a Layover
Staying centrally allows you to explore the island with ease. While Ponta Delgada makes a convenient home base (especially for tours), adventurous travelers may prefer a more scenic spot like Santa Bárbara on the north coast. We stayed near here but I if I booked another trip I would stay in Santa Barbara. Use platforms like Booking.com to find the right balance of comfort and location.
Renting a Car (Highly Recommended)
To make the most of your time, renting a car is pretty much essential. While tours are available, having your own car gives you the flexibility to chase good weather, skip the crowds, and explore hidden gems. We used Discover Cars to compare rates and book in advance.

Day 1: Islands, Hot Springs, and Scenic Views
- Vila Franca do Campo Islet
Take a morning ferry to this small volcanic islet turned swimming crater. It’s a quick ride (10 minutes) but unforgettable—think clear water, bird colonies, and wave-carved rock pools. - Lagoa das Furnas Scenic Stop
This unexpected roadside viewpoint was perfect for a quick leg-stretch and picnic. Look for the wooden statue of Gandalf and enjoy sweeping lake views. - Furnas Village & Thermal Springs
This geothermal hub bubbles with natural energy—literally. Visit Parque Terra Nostra for a soak in iron-rich thermal waters or sample Cozido das Furnas, a traditional stew cooked underground. - Evening Coastal Walk
If you’re staying nearby, unwind with a short walk along a coastal trail before dinner.
Day 2: Pineapples, Crater Lakes & Sunset Dips
- Pineapple Plantation Visit
São Miguel’s tiny pineapples grow in greenhouses! Stop by Plantação Ananases A Arruda for a 30-minute visit including a short film, greenhouse tour, and pineapple liqueur tasting. - Explore Ponta Delgada
Stroll cobbled streets, grab snacks at Mercado da Graça, and admire the historic city gates. This is a great place to shop for local cheese, jam, and ceramics. - Hike Sete Cidades
One of the most iconic hikes on the island. Walk along the crater rim with views of twin volcanic lakes—Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde. We hiked point-to-point (about 8 miles) and grabbed a taxi back to our car. - Swim at Ponta da Ferraria
Soak in natural hot springs where volcanic heat meets the ocean—warmer at low tide! There’s a free swimming area and a paid spa nearby. - Dinner & Sunset at Seaside Vibez
Finish the day with a burger and a view on a cliffside patio.
Day 3: Tea, Surf & Scenic Drives
- Gorreana Tea Plantation
Europe’s oldest tea plantation offers free tours, ocean views, and a peaceful walk among tea fields. Sample both green and black teas after your visit. - Surf or Lounge at Santa Bárbara Beach
One of the island’s best beaches. Take a surf lesson or enjoy lunch at the beachside café with dramatic views of the waves. - Scenic Drive
End your layover with a winding drive through the island’s rugged landscape. Stop at viewpoints like Miradouro de Santa Iria or revisit a favorite spot from earlier in the trip.
Other Highlights If You Have More Time
- Lagoa do Fogo (Lake of Fire): Jaw-dropping views and great hiking
- Caldeira Velha: Natural jungle hot springs with waterfalls
- Salto do Cabrito Waterfall: Hidden hike and swim spot
- Ribeira Grande: Azorean charm with surf shops and local eats
- Kayak or SUP on Lagoa das Sete Cidades: Unique volcanic water adventure

We actually hope to book another layover on our next trip across the Atlantic.
