Quick Look at the Black Lake Hike, Zabljak
Distance: 2.9 miles Elevation Gain: 500 feet Difficulty: easy
The hiking distance above describe the hike around the park, but there is a short walk to get to the start of the trail depending on where you park. We stayed nearby so walked from our rental, but there is a busy parking lot a bit of a walk from the trailhead.
The Black Lake (Crno Jezero) is the largest glacial lake in Durmitor National Park, often referred to as the “mountain eye.” Nestled at the foot of Međed Peak, it was shaped by glacial activity. The lake actually consists of two smaller bodies of water: Big Lake (Veliko Jezero) and Small Lake (Malo Jezero), although at times the water level makes this into one single lake.
Getting to Black Lake
Black Lake is just a few minute drive from the main town of Zabljak. You will need to pay to park and then there is a small fee to enter Durmitor National Park. There are parking guards and a ticket booth before you get to the lake. From here there is a short walk to the lake itself.

The hiking trail at Black Lake is an easy walk that is something everyone can do.
The hike begins at the at the lake accessed directly from the ticket booth, where the well-marked path immediately leads you into a forest of towering pines and firs. As you ascend gradually, the canopy provides welcome shade. Early in the hike, you’ll cross a small wooden bridge over a trickling stream, the first of several peaceful water crossings. About a mile in, the trail opens to a overlook, with sweeping views of the surrounding valleys and distant mountain peaks—an ideal spot for a quick rest or photo.
The trai continues similarly around the lake, but there are many other trails that you can add on to make the hike longer.
