Our Honest Take on Hobbitenango
When the world of the hobbits meets Guatemala what to you get? This fun little eco-village. We visited right after spending 2 days hiking the nearby volcano and realized we missed the opportunity to start in the Shire and hike the ring to the volcano! From Hobbitenango you can see the Volcan Fuego erupting.
If you love the world of Tolkien, this is a great place to visit and a fun place to spend the night – but if you are looking for an authentic experience in Guatemala, this isn’t the place. That said, this is a good activity to do if you are spending time in Antigua and want to get up into the area outside the town for some photos!

The Views
Everywhere you look, the Panchoy Valley stretches out below you with the volcanoes rising up in the distance. On a clear day you can see three volcanoes, Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango. The park is designed so you can get views from many location. The best viewpoint in the park is El Nido (The Nest).

Enjoy the Architecture
The architecture here is the real draw, round hobbit-style doors, cozy cottages, and 26 different areas to explore scattered across the mountainside. You can wander in and out of the little hobbit houses and after spending the night and day there we were still discovering more little nooks and carefully designed corners- and the best part is they all make fantastic photos!

The Activities
Your admission gets you a lot. The entrance fee covers unlimited games like archery, axe throwing, mini golf, and the giant swing, plus access to all the trails. The swing is a must, it goes out over the highlands with the volcanoes in the background. I think our favorite activity was actually the archery and as throwing (which was surprisingly hard).
There are several small trails that run across the hillside and the highlight (in terms of the photos) is the hand that holds you up over the volcanos and valley.
If you are staying here, all the activities are included.

The Food
There are several restaurants in Hobbitenango that look straight out of Lord of the Rings, with cozy fireplaces and huge round windows overlooking the surrounding landscape. The food was good and made from fresh ingredients, well-prepared, and the hobbit-themed cocktails are a fun touch. It’s a little more expensive that other places in Antiqua.
If you spend the night – you will eat breakfast down the hill at the parking lot at a nice restaurant.
Pro Tip: Go on a weekday and arrive early to beat the crowds, especially if you want to snag a seat on the outdoor patio or avoid long waits at the swing and the hand.
